Completing the driver background check process
Last updated March 8, 2026
Every GoRoute driver applicant must pass a background check before they can go online and accept ride requests. This is a critical part of our commitment to rider safety and is conducted by our third-party screening partner, Checkr.
What the background check covers
The screening reviews several areas of your history:
- Criminal history: A search of national and county-level criminal databases for felony and misdemeanor convictions over the past seven years.
- Driving record: A motor vehicle report (MVR) that checks for major violations such as DUIs, reckless driving, or license suspensions.
- Sex offender registry: A check against the national sex offender public registry.
- Identity verification: Confirmation that your Social Security number, name, and date of birth match public records.
How long it takes
Most background checks are completed within 3 to 5 business days. In some cases — particularly if your records span multiple counties or states — the process can take up to 10 business days. You can check the status of your background check at any time by opening the GoRoute Driver app and navigating to Account > Application Status.
What can cause a delay or disqualification
Common reasons for delays include name mismatches, address discrepancies, or court records that require manual verification. If your background check reveals disqualifying offenses — such as a felony conviction in the past seven years, a DUI in the past three years, or registration on a sex offender list — your application will be declined.
If you believe there's an error on your report, you have the right to dispute the findings directly with Checkr. GoRoute will provide you with a copy of the report and instructions on how to file a dispute. Once the dispute is resolved, your application will be re-evaluated automatically.
